What does “Seen” mean on Facebook Chat?

In this article I will talk about a new "SEEN" feature introduced lately on Facebook chat.

When someone sees your most recent message, it will be marked as seen. That way, you always know who got the message, and who didn't.

Messages are marked as seen if the person is actively chatting or checking their messages. This feature is part of every message you send, whether it's from your phone or the web.

This is a new feature introduced lately. A lot of people on the Facebook find it really strange and don't understand what it means. It's an update by Facebook and tells you if the other person has seen your message, but hasn't responded yet. It's an update and since there are so many users on Facebook, it hasn't reached everyone yet.

UPDATE: If you want to disable this "Seen" feature or delete Facebook check these tutorials below:

This is a little controversial, at least for me,  because this is an invasion of privacy. What if I don't want to answer to someone, or I want to answer some time later?

What are your thoughts on this? Please feel free to a leave comment below.

  1. I agree that this is a little controversial, but it is also like having caller ID-you either answer it or you do not. The person sending the message is now aware if his/her message will be answered.

  2. I agree, this is kind of controversial, a lot of times I don't want to answer a question and pretend I never saw the message, but that won't work anymore

    ReplyDelete
  3. Thanks for commenting.

I agree, that's what I talk about. :) There is no way more to pretend that you didn't see message.

  4. This is pretty great, just made use of it when this girl tried to make it seem like she didn't see my message when she actually read it 30 mins after I sent it... Just wanted to make sure I was right about what it was before bringing it up.

  5. I don't like this! I might see the message yes but in a hurry and can't respond at the said time, but of course the person on the other side would think that I don't want to talk with them. Plus, it's an evasion of my privacy. No one has to always know when I am actually online if I don't want them to know- as I can be signed in but not active online. I don't like it.

I was actually just trying to talk with my brother and I saw 'seen with the time' came up. So I Googled quickly to confirm what it means. Who knows, maybe he is rushing off an assignment for college or engaged in a deep conversation with his wife or someone else. I am not interested in knowing that someone saw my message and ignored it. If someone wants to answer later in the day, they should have that right to do so without feeling conscious about it!

  6. It's meant to make facebook less anonymous feeling. Like real life. If you heard something, you respond to it, if not, you ignore it. Well, not always do people walk with a reason on walking away. Can feel pretty impolite. Why treat those you're talking online with the same way?

Just because it's the internet, does not mean your actions should change. I LOVE this to be honest. It's like MyYearBooks 'read, unread', or TribalWars (a game) read or unread. It's nice. If a person is going to just ignore you, but now you know they read it, you can quit wasting your time.

Yea, so.. about those red hot chilli peppers.. (lol)

  7. Thanks for commenting, Donz.

I agree completely with you, that's also my point of view for this new Facebook update.

  8. Thanks a lot, it really help me, now i will know if my crush seen my message or not, HAHahhahahah!

  9. Juat as an afterthought: How do you know they have really read your message?? The computer might be switched on but they're off having a cup of coffee in the kitchen. It is not eyetracking, is it?!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, this is pretty good question. My thought is that this new feature is activity tracking, but I am not sure.

If somebody knows how this really works, feel free to comment.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If it would be actively tracking, I'd find it really invasive.
Thinking about it though, to do anything like that wouldn't the webcam have to be switched on? I don't think facebook can automatically switch on your webcam when you log on. Or can it...?? Scary thought!!

  12. Messages are marked as seen if the person is actively chatting or checking their messages.

    ReplyDelete
  13. How do I know if the message i sent offline is seen or not

    ReplyDelete
  14. That's easy one. Just open a chat window of that person, instead of going to inbox.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would assume that this means if you minimize your chat box with said person, and the little red flag pops up saying they messaged you, it wouldn't be marked as seen. As soon as you click it to maximize it, it would be marked as seen. If you kept the box open, it most likely wouldn't update as seen. Something to experiment with a friend on facebook with.

  16. This chrome extension disables Facebook chat's new "seen" feature. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gfjpoahaombpolfifdahikhbdnjjeifk Enjoy!

  17. I think it's great! It lets you know who your real friends are and distinguishes them from mere Facebook Friends. My girlfriend doesn't seem to understand that SEEN means I know when she has received and read my message; it's really funny to listen to the stories she concocts about what she was doing when she was actually reading my message and deciding not to answer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. what about tha inbos? i mean if you open your inbox but not tha messagedoes it marked as seen?

    ReplyDelete
  19. This new feature works also with inbox.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't like it too. I sent a message to a lady I helped before, and she is not responding. but I see seen yesterday. i feel upset. if I don't know she is seen it, I would have thought maybe she didn't notice it and wait further. but now I know she've seen it and wouldn't reply. I gonna unfriend if she doesn't reply in a day. I'd rather not know.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What if you're on facebook already and someone messages you. Does it count it as "seen" even if you didn't click on it?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think, that you need to click on it, to count as seen.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lol, sometimes I want to see the message but don't want to reply cause the person could be annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sometimes it's fun to chat if it is stranger. Just to find some more friends. Thanks for your nice post.

    ReplyDelete
  25. has anyone checked the whole opening inbox but not actually opening the message itself thing? because the message notification does go away but then it is tinted to say you haven't actually read the whole thing..

    ReplyDelete
  26. No, guys. You have it all wrong. It means the FBI have seen your post. Did you know that every post is seen by them?
And that if you post the words 'terrorist' a lot (or something similar) they'll arrest you?
    They're monitoring EVERYONE and EVERYTHING.
Just think about it. It doesn't MATTER if the friend's seen your message, obviously they're gonna see it if they're online.

    ReplyDelete
  27. What facebook is doing is slowly but surely clamping down our free rights to privacy on the social networking website! Is this necessary? It's not a police investigation, so why are they doing this? Do you not see, users of Facebook, the potential danger you're in by letting it make whatever changes without your consent? Forcing the Timeline on users whether they like it or not (And do any of you now find it creepy that a stalker could see where and what places you've been at what time? on a map and everything?), the time wasting I.Q dropping apps (these seriously need to go away) and now this 'seen by' feature which is redundant and annoying. Do we really need this? Facebook is having fun playing the voyeur and the bastard Zuckerberg is making billions off a legal crime. Open your eyes and stop oversharing everything with stupid status posts (I don't care what the hell you ate for lunch) and freely sharing info and making yourself a reality star wannabe in a warped self obsessed vanity. It's time to quit facebook for good! Who knows what controversial update it'll put up next, and by that time, it might be too late!

  28. when it tells you that they have seen your message that you sent and it shows a time rightfor example: seen at 9:20am. if i sent a message to someone to mexico,is the time that is shown from where they are at or is it from where im at

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really don't know. I am assuming that converts it to local time.

If someone knows about this interesting question, feel free to leave a comment.

    Thanks for commenting. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. If you send a comment to a time zone different than your own it shows the time it was read converted to YOUR local time .

  31. IT's stupid. It doesn't mean the person saw it at all. It means they c o u l d have seen it if they were looking right at the screen or at the actual chat window. But if you already had the window up (because sometimes they just stay up) you may not notice a new message. There is no obligation...it's still private enough. People leave their computers on...walk away from screen...and didn't see nothin'.

    ReplyDelete
  32. hay how to enable this feature?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, I don't know how to enable it, because I got it automatically from FB.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I find this very useful, but I have a question:

I just notice this by myself. Opening the chat windows, even if both of us are disconnected from the chat it shows you if the message was read or not.

But, I saw 1 person was "ignoring me", while I was looking all the time the times where he was seen the messages, I asked: why u don't reply me? it's creepy, and he told me he has facebook open all the time, can this be true?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I believe this is true... I sent a msg to my GF and it said it was "seen". But she didn't actually read the msg. She had FB open along with chat, but was eating dinner with her family.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I might test it, but you should consider option, that she lies to you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I do not use chat at all, but am curious about the way it works in messages. If I simply open my entire inbox or click to make the notification flag go away, but not actually open the message, does it show that I've "seen" the message or must I actually open the message itself for it to show as "seen?"

    ReplyDelete
  38. What if someone has read our message & later deleted it..still we able to see the time of seen message?i am little bit confuse.Actually i have sent couple of messages to my friend.in all messages i found seen except second last. What it mean..?does she had deleted after read?or she has not read?or she has deleted without read?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nice blog to reading thanks for sharing such useful information this is very helpful for student who study Assignments Online Help and keep continue to sharing useful information.

  40. This is such a weird feature! However, I don't seem to have it on my messages yet! The other day, someone was able to tell that I had read their message and asked why I hadn't responded... I was so shocked!

The check marks don't show up in my messages yet, nor do I see the "seen" message yet.

    Why is that??

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, it doesn't show automatically to all, as any other feature on the Facebook. Obviously you will have to wait a while, before you get this feature.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I really don't like this, it's kinda break of privacy

    ReplyDelete
  43. So I messaged someone who I do not have added as a friend, will it still say "seen" if they read the message or does this feature only work for people you have added as FRIENDS? I am curious bc I messaged someone who I do not have added as a friend about a week ago and they still have not gotten back to me, nor does it say "seen". So I am confused is this feature "for friends" only?

  44. This article is amazing as it helps me to get the sort of information was needed by me. I am thankful to get your article when was searching chat web

    ReplyDelete
  45. hi can i confirm that if the inbox is opened but not the new message received will unopened message still be stamped as seen?

    would appreciate any help thanks

    ReplyDelete
  46. I sent someone a message and as I was online I saw that it was check marked as "seen at x.xxpm". However a minute later the check mark disappeared and little arrow (which indicates not read) came back. Had I not been online I would have never known that the person saw my message. So I think that even if the message has been read, if the reader reads the message but chooses the option "mark as unread" OR if they delete your message, it will never appear as "Seen at x.xxpm" on your end.... maybe a way around the controversy?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sometimes I want to see the concept but don't want to response cause the individual could be frustrating.

I normally wouldn’t be able to find such great content as this on other sites. You have done a great job with each unique point made on this topic. Thank you for your hard work.

  49. Quick question for all you folks... Does that mean that if the message does NOT appear as 'seen' the person hasn't read it?? Is it possible that a FB message simply didn't go though? I sent someone a message a few days ago, and she's been on a few times since. I can't imagine she wouldn't have read it yet. Is it possible it simply did not go though?

    ReplyDelete
  50. ^ Anon, if a message doesn't go through, normally FB says so - that the message isn't properly sent, etcetc. Yes, so far, a person hasn't read the message if it's not marked as 'seen' yet. At least, that's my conclusion...

As on whether I like this feature or not, I'll say that it has its pros and cons. If I have something urgent to convey, this feature helps tell me whether the other party has seen it or not. If it's marked as "seen", then I know that I don't have to worry anymore.

But I understand the invasion of privacy - I, too, can't use the "I have not seen your message" reason anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have sent a message to someone and is now marked as SEEN however it says they have not been on chat for 23 hours? Yet the message was marked as seen a few hours previous. Does anyone know why this is?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hello! Does the rate of updates of your website depend on specific things or you compose articles when you have an inspiration or write blog entries in case you have enough time for that? Waiting forward to hear your answer.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Both. It depends have much free time I have, and to have inspiration for it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The other day, i sent someone a message in her inbox. And after a while (while leaving the inbox open) i noticed the "seen" live, but after a while it disappeared. Now whenever i open our previous conversation, i don't see any "seen". Do you have any idea why? Thank you i appreciate it.

  55. Thanks for sharing above help. Its really a working trick for facebook users. I have one more trick for FB users If anyone wants to hide their offline friends list from chat panel. The only thing they just need to do is, download Google chrome extiontion which takes hardly 5 minutes of your time. When I heard about this extention from my friends I thought that they were just kidding but after browsing on internet I found same above mentioned trick and it really works. If any of you wants to show only the friends who are online, must install this extension with the help of above link provided.

  62. EVERYONE HERE'S A TIP ABOUT THE "SEEN" ...if you read it and either don't want the person to know you read it or can't answer it till later, click the "actions" drop down menu and then click "Mark as unread."
